Car keys, due to their electronic transponder components, are somewhat less predictable and more prone to mechanical issues as compared to typical mechanical house keys. Bent Keys

Car keys can bend, twist, and warp over long periods of time or due to sudden physical stress. While bent keys can fit into your ignition sometimes, they still won’t be able to turn the internal switch in the ignition that needs to start the engine. Sometimes bent keys can be fixed with pressure applied with a small hammer.  

Worn Down Keys

Car keys can wear down over time from use - this is especially bad when it happens to keys attached to old cars. You can replace the key, or try to use a spare key if you have one. Or, you can  have a brand new car keys cut to code by a licensed automotive locksmith expert!  

Grabbing the Wrong Key

Sometimes people accidentally grab the wrong key - this is especially common when people grab the keys to their partner’s other car.  

Additional Common Car Key Issues

Sometimes the inner mechanisms inside your car’s ignition system aren’t working correctly - in which case you will need to have the ignition repaired by a licensed automotive locksmith. Other issues might include the steering wheel being in the wrong position, which can easily make the lock stick and block you from inserting or removing a key. Your car’s gear may also be off the park setting - so once you put the car back in park (and not reverse or drive) the key might work properly again!
